Theme:

Family, self-esteem, and kangaroos facts

 

Subjects: 

The length of the MDU will cover approximately 5-7 days for 30/45 minute time slot and include: Second Grade Level Reading, Science, Spelling, Geography, and Math.  It meets many of the South Dakota State Standards.

 

Goals:

     This unit was created to develop for my student’s exposure to feelings within families, kangaroo facts, research a topic using the computer, review contractions and reading enjoyment.

 

Resources and assessments:

     Book: The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo by Judy Blume, Teacher Created Materials, Inc., teacher created worksheets on contractions, quiz, comprehension test, observation of reading skills and language skills.

 

Reading Goals:

1.Read  The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo.

     2. Learn new vocabulary

     3. Enforce sight words

     4. Comprehension

#5-recognize specific strategies are needed to read different types of printed materials

#6-use knowledge of sentence structure and punctuating when reading.

#9-identify simple figurative language in text

Activities & Lessons

 

Day 1:

Reading:

     Introduce the author, Judy Blume, and the book The One in the Middle I Green Kangaroo.

     Introduce the Spelling words for the week from the story.

Language:

     Student will write about his/her family unit in her/his journal—the position in the family.

 

Day 2

Computer:

     Research on kangaroos

Day 3

Reading:

     Play vocabulary game with vocabulary / spelling words for chpt.1

     Read and discuss chapter 1

Language:

Discuss/review contractions

Create a word search with vocabulary/spelling words

Math:

     Create questionnaire for classmates on family—tally # in the family & the position in the family

 

Day 4

Reading:

Introduce vocabulary/spelling words from Chapter 2

Language:

     Use vocabulary words /spelling in sentences

Journal writing: “How do you think you would feel as a middle child?”

Math:

     Tally the questionnaire and create a graph using the information—bar graph

Listening activity:

     Several items to be arranged so one item is in the middle

 

Day 5

 Reading:

      Hide and Seek game with vocabulary/spelling words

     Quiz over the first 2 chapters (characters, setting, problem)

     Predict what changes will occur to solve the problem

 

Day 6

Reading:

     Read/discuss chapter 3 & 4

     Change your prediction?

Geography:

     Use globe to find Australia, discuss continents, means of travel, seasons, etc.

    

Day 7

Reading:

     Vocabulary/spelling test

     Comprehension test

Science:

     Jumping experiment e.g. Wkst. From Teachers Created Materials

 

Day 8

Technology/ Writing Activity:

     Using the computer information gathered from Day 2, write a paragraph answering the following questions. 

     Kangaroo research

a.             Where do kangaroos live?

b.            What is a baby kangaroo called?

c.             What do kangaroos eat?

d.            How many type are kangaroos are there?

e.             What is a marsupial?

f.  What animal is smaller/larger than a kangaroo? 

 

Day 9

Language:

     Review friendly letter format

     --compose a letter to Judy Blume about your reaction to the story or email her-----
